A storybook ending

While we were walking around the park, Eli told me about an experience he had in Ukraine. I didn't realize he had been there during the Orange Revolution!! I wrote a paper on the Orange Revolution--it was what allowed a western-leaning government to take over. Yushchenko had ran against Yanukovich for the presidency, and through a series of dodgy events--including poisoning of Yushchenko and rigged elections--Yanukovich was declared the victor. Luckily, local NGOs had set up poll watchers outside voting areas, and it was shown that the results were faked. What followed was the Orange Revolution, as people rallied around Yushchenko. The election was reheld, and Yushchenko was chosen president.

So all of this was going on and Eli and his companion had gone out wandering around--even making it to the square where the revolution was at. He said that he happened to walk by and older woman who was selling produce on the side of the street. A man was about to buy something from her, and they were talking. Eli and his companion overheard the babushka (grandma) say, as if they were in a scene from a movie, "Ukraine is already dead." And the old man reply, "But we, we shall live on!" Roll credits.

How picturesque is that? By the way, it totally sounds better in Russian.
